Tastee's opens for season Thursday, more cold treat stops soon to follow

Posted by Adam in Dining, 2/26/2020

In case the milder temps, puddles and street side streams aren’t indicator enough, a true harbinger that the tide of the seasons is turning comes on Thursday with the opening of a popular seasonal frozen treat and food stop.

Tastee's Ice Cream & Grill officially opens for 2020 tomorrow from its location on 1st Street. In addition to top-selling items like soft serve ice cream, cheeseburgers and poutine, new to the menu this year is fried chicken. On the cool treat side of the menu, a marshmallow topping is now introduced for ice cream.

The restaurant has been under the ownership of Ken Chang and Claudia Leung since 2018. Over that time the owners have put their own stamp on the business, including last year’s introduction to the local market of popular Hong Kong street food known as the “egg waffle.”

Tastee's will soon be joined by other seasonal establishments, with Twisters’ grand opening for the season set for Saturday at 1pm. As part of opening Twisters will be giving a free kids cone to their first 50 customers. Dairy Queen’s seasonal 904 18th street location then joins its year-round locations in the city beginning Sunday. Velvet Dip has most recently said that it is planning to kick off its 55th Anniversary year on or around the weekend of March 20th.

After a somewhat frosty Wednesday with a high of just -9, temperatures are forecast to make a turn for the better on Thursday in the lead-in to March with highs between -2 and +2 degrees between Thursday and Tuesday.
