As Shoppers Mall moves towards the second month of its re-opening amidst the ongoing response to the COVID-19 pandemic, it will do so with a highly anticipated new tenant in the mix beginning next week.
The Brandon Public Library will on Monday open its Shoppers Mall satellite location as an additional way to give folks in the community access to its catalogue of content that includes over 100,000 books, audiobooks, magazines and movies.
The soft opening comes just one month behind an initial pre-COVID-19 schedule that had been shared when plans for the satellite location were learned to much fanfare in March. Needless to say a lot has changed in the world since that time. In order to open safely on Monday in the present public health environment, initial services offered will focus on picking up material placed on hold, registering for library cards, offering assistance with eResources and processing returns.
Residents are able to place requests for books through a handful of methods that include phoning either library branch, e-mailing or using the online reservation system that comes with the ability to choose your pickup location. The library will do its best to ensure that chosen material is available for pickup at the chosen location within 24 hours, providing a phone call or e-mail when ready.
Returns can then later be made to either location, with initial returns not being due back any sooner than July 2.
Plans are to expand to include an on-site browsing collection of books at a later date when prudent to do so.
The library was forced to temporarily close its Downtown Brandon branch in March amidst the initial public health orders issued as part of the ongoing response to the pandemic. During that time, residents have at times had access to content through a new contactless home delivery service that sees members check out books remotely.
In addition to Monday’s opening, the WMRL is preparing for the re-opening of the Downtown location over reduced hours beginning June 16.
The new Shoppers Mall library branch is located in a mall space between David’s Tea and Rogers. Initial hours for the soft opening will be 11am to 6pm, Monday through Friday.
