The City of Brandon and Province of Manitoba are currently in the process of preparing to meet the challenge of a rising Assiniboine River in the wake of this week’s historic rains.
On Thursday morning the swelled river could be seen overspilling its banks at low-lying points in the city including BYSA Soccer Park and Queen Elizabeth Park along with the beginnings of flood water in Dinsdale Park and in Grand Valley. Crews were hard at work filling the hole in the 18th St and Grand Valley Road dike.
I took an hour out on Thursday morning to have a look at the current state a handful of points along the river in the city and have included a number of photos in a gallery below.
A reminder that you can see a live shot from atop the hill at 18th Street any time using the live eBrandon webcam situated at Grand Valley Church. The image is updated once per minute and posted on the weather page.
Most recent forecasted river levels have the Assiniboine peaking in the days ahead at several feet below the level that the dike system is built to withstand. The city issued evacuation preparation notices to homes in low lying areas on Wednesday out of an abundance of caution should an evacuation become necessary.
