Grand Valley Strawberries opens for the season

Posted by Adam in Gardening, 7/3, 3:45 PM

As Brandonites live a summer without many of the traditional warm season events that they’ve become accustomed to, a long-time community institution shared the welcome news on Friday that it will open for the season this coming weekend.

Grand Valley Strawberries has shared that it will kick off the 2020 edition of its U-Pick operation on Saturday. An initially-planned 8am opening had to be delayed slightly due to Saturday morning’s early thunderstorm and rain, with plans to now bring to operate on opening day from 1pm to 6pm after allowing the fields time to dry. Pre-picked berries will not be available at this time.

Those familiar with the strawberry farm will know that it maintains two separate picking sites that are used at different points in time. 2020 picking will begin at what it refers to as its Riverside location just East of the City along Veterans Way. At other times it maintains its ‘Hillside’ location slightly further East on Veterans Way, with signage to be posted on any given day clearly marking the picking location. Information will also be published ahead of time at grandvalleystrawberries.ca, the farm’s social media and its pre-recorded phone message at 204.728.8453.

A sneak peak of the picking site, which despite its Riverside name is high and dry from the swollen Assiniboine, can be seen in the interactive 360 panorama below. Click/tap and drag around the scene shot late Friday afternoon to have a look around at the rows of berries awaiting picking:

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, updated safety guidelines will be in place including that a two person limit per basket, visitors much stay in assigned rows, mandatory sanitizing of hands before entering and after exiting the field (sanitizer provided on-site). Visitors are not permitted to eat berries in the field. In the event the fields become busy, visitors may be asked to wait in their vehicle until safe.  A full list of updated guidelines and rules is included in the images at the end of this post.

The price for a 4L U-Pick pail is $14.

Updated: July 4, 12pm. Added info re opening day rain delay.
