Meet the pothole’s bigger brother, the sinkhole

Posted by Adam in Driving, 7/20/2020

First is was the flooded basements. Then the ongoing threat of flash flooding from the Assiniboine and most recently an over-inundation of mosquitoes.

As folks in the city deal with the still ongoing realities of the above, there are signs of a challenge of a different kind that has reared its head on city streets in recent weeks. At at least two spots in the city, impromptu sinkholes have made an appearance of late… testing the awareness of drivers going about their commute.

In both cases, holes approximately 4-5 feet wide on Parkdale Drive as well as on busier 10th Street, the obstacles are clearly marked with City of Brandon barricades on all sides so that motorists and pedestrians know what lies ahead.

A City of Brandon representative has shared that it’s believed both holes are related to damage to the pipe that connects the catch basin to the nearby manhole, to be confirmed tomorrow by the televised camera system used to diagnose such issues. At that point both are likely to be filled and scheduled for more permanent repair. Motorists are advised to use caution in both areas.

You can report similar issues with roadways either via the City’s pothole hotline at 204-729-2200 or the “Report an issue” for on the City of Brandon website at https://brandon.ca/report-an-issue

In both cases the instructions at this point at least pale in comparison to a car-sized crater that opened up on busy 1st Street in 2014. That particular obstruction was estimated to stretch 20 feet across at its widest point and eight feet deep.
