Construction underway on huge 200+ unit pet-friendly apartment development

Brandon’s South End is that much closer to a large infusion of more than 200 apartment rental housing units as construction kicks into gear this summer on the planned Aspen Greens multi-family development on Sycamore Drive.

Across more than 5 acres of land previously the site of the Kingsway Kort mobile home park will be two separate 4-storey buildings totalling 208 open-concept 1, 2 and 3 bedroom apartments ranging in size from 657 square feet more than 1000 square feet.

The completed property is to feature common amenities such as a community lounge, community gardens, bike racks and an on-site playground. Of note is the pet-friendly nature of the development, which sees all apartments permit pets with deposit (up to two total combined cats or dogs per unit). Both a dog run and dog wash are listed as features.

Pet policy on the developer’s website indicates that pets are required to attend a pet interview for approval and notes some restrictions based on size and breed.

Aspen Greens is operated by Campbell River, BC-based Broadstreet Properties Inc, which has developments across British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Both buildings in the Brandon development are being constructed in tandem, with waiting list additions presently being taken for units of all sizes. 

The city has struggled with a low vacancy rate in recent years, with statistics published by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation showing a 2.6% average across all apartment sizes in its 2019 Rental Market Survey. That compared to just 1% in 2018. As of October 2019 the same report indicates a total of 3,775 private apartment rental units in the city.

Aspen Greens, in development at 1640 Sycamore Drive, is currently slated for completion and occupancy by Spring/Summer 2021.
