A whirlwind 15 months continued for Joel Edmundson on Saturday with news that the local defenceman’s NHL rights have been traded for the second time in just under a year.
The 6’4” blueliner’s rights now belong to the Montreal Canadiens following a trade from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for a 5th round draft choice that was announced on Saturday afternoon.
Edmundson had been awarded a 1-year reported $3.1 million contract by an arbitrator last summer and is to become an unrestricted free agent on October 9. Should a contract not be reached with the Canadiens he would be free to sign with any team.
The Brandon minor hockey product was traded to the Hurricanes by the St. Louis Blues late last September just two kin the after the Blues’ Stanley Cup triumph over the Boston Bruins. In one season with Carolina, Edmundson posted 7 goals and 20 points bringing career totals to 20 goals and 72 points in 337 NHL games.
The Hurricanes were eliminated from the 2020 NHL playoffs in August by the Boston Bruins.
