Family day trip gems: Ninette’s Terry Fox Memorial Park at Pelican Lake

Posted by Adam in Travel, 9/18, 10:52 AM

A once off-the-radar, ideally situated Westman green space has emerged as an ideal spot for small family day trips in recent years thanks to an ongoing series of well-thought-out upgrades.

Set on the North shore of Pelican Lake, Ninette’s Terry Fox Memorial Park features just the right mix of amenities for a family outing.

Following upgrades in 2019 and 2020, the playground features a mix of new swings and a rocker alongside refreshed legacy play structure equipment. Also adjacent to the small beach are picnic tables, benches, fire pits and public restrooms. Though the days at this time of the year are getting colder, the water itself includes a dock along with a swimming platform.

In a part of the planet where pets and beaches aren’t always able to easily co-exist, the space is a breath of fresh air for dog owners in permitting furry friends provided they’re on-leash and cleaned up after.

On a recent visit I was able to capture a panoramic photo to give a wider sense for the space and have included that image below. Click/tap and drag within the image below to have a look around (see further below for additional photos):

The park is named for Canadian hero Terry Fox, who along with family was known to spend summers in the area including the waters of Pelican Lake during his youth.

As the province, country and globe adapt to ongoing realities surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic, the Ninette area is no exception in the fundamentals that Manitobans are being asked to adhere to when going about their days. Those throughout the region are asked In a notice on a website for the park operated by the R.M. of Prairie Lakes, it is stated that on-site restrooms are open for public use and sanitized daily. Visitors are using at their own risk.
