Position Summary:
The Health Care Aide (HCA) provides compassionate, client-centered, and culturally safe care to Sioux Valley Dakota Nation community members within their homes and in community settings. Under the direction and supervision of licensed nursing staff, the HCA assists with activities of daily living, personal care, mobility, nutrition, medication reminders, and health promotion. The HCA plays a key role in supporting clients to remain independent, safe, and well in their homes, while upholding the values, traditions, and healing perspectives of the Dakota Oyate.
Position Duties:
Direct Client Care
- Provide personal care, including bathing, rooming, oral hygiene, dressing, and toileting.
- Assist with safe mobility, transfers, and positioning using proper techniques and equipment.
- Support nutritional needs, including meal preparation, feeding assistance, and hydration reminders.
- Provide medication reminders as directed by the Home and Community Care Nurse.
- Observe, record, and report changes in clients? physical, emotional, and mental health status.
- Support palliative, chronic, and acute care clients with dignity and respect.
Home & Community Support
- Maintain a safe, clean, and comfortable environment in clients? homes.
- Assist with light housekeeping tasks directly related to client care (e.g., laundry, changing linens).
- Encourage independence and promote self-care whenever possible.
Communication & Documentation
- Document care provided and observations in client records in a timely and accurate manner.
- Communicate effectively with clients, families, and the interdisciplinary health team.
- Respect client confidentiality and privacy in all interactions.
Cultural & Community Integration
- Provide care that respects Dakota traditions, values, and healing practices.
- Participate in community-based wellness events, health education, and cultural activities as appropriate.
- Build trusting relationships with clients, Elders, and families to support holistic healing and wellness.
Teamwork & Professionalism
- Work collaboratively with nurses, physicians, and allied health staff.
- Adhere to Sioux Valley Health Centre policies, procedures, and safety protocols.
- Demonstrate reliability, accountability, and commitment to quality care.
Qualifications:
- Completion of a recognized Health Care Aide/Health Care Assistant program (or equivalent).
- Current CPR/First Aid certification.
- Non-Violent Crisis Intervention and/or Mental Health First Aid an asset.
- Previous experience working in a Home and Community Care, long-term care, or hospital setting preferred.
- Experience working with Indigenous communities is an asset.
- Must hold a valid Class 5 Manitoba Driver's Licence and have access to a reliable vehicle.
- Must provide a satisfactory Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search and Adult/Child Abuse Registry Checks.
- Must comply with Sioux Valley Health Centre immunization and health requirements.
