One of the classics from the early 70's

a BBC crew travelled to some village in Italy some days before April 1 and asked the villagers to pay an April fools joke on the English people - villagers pasted long spaghetti strands onto certain trees in their village and BBC filmed them picking the spaghetti off the trees - the prankster villagers pledged to keep quiet about the joke - on April 1 BBC TV aired the short film showing Italian villagers picking spaghetti from the trees - the film said that these trees would survive very well in a colder rainy climate like England and tree nurseries were expecting deliveries of these trees in early May - supposedly the trees would grow quickly and people could begin picking the 1st crop of spaghetti from the trees by August - the trees would continue to grow spaghetti throughout the summer months.
As soon as it aired hundreds of people in England were calling their local tree nurseries to put in orders for the trees - within an hour the nurseries were begging BBC TV to admit that this was an April fools joke as they were being besieged by phone calls. Apparently some people believe that spaghetti grows on trees. This was one of the classic April 1 jokes - sometimes on April 1 this short film clip is replayed for our enjoyment.
