I have recently been given a letter by my Dr to allow me a support animal. I currently live in an apt no pets allowed.  
Now I'm looking for a place that will allow a small dog, however it seems there are no rentals that. Allow pets.  
Any ideas???

Having pets is something for homeowners, not renters.  
 
A lot of landlords have tried renting to petowners and had to replace carpet, etc. I don't blame them for not renting to petowners. These rentals are their property and provides their income. With such a shortage of rentals in Brandon they can be choosy as to who to rent to.  
 
I know your Dr recommends a dog but try to find a way to purchase your own home where you can make the rules. Renting a place is a privilege, not a right.

Unfortunately, too many pets aren't trained properly, and even many that are trained will still do hefty damage to rental units. As already mentioned, having a pet is a privilege that you aren't guaranteed as a renter.

This might be a dumb question, but does the support animal have to be a small dog, can it be something like a guinea pig or bearded dragon, something smaller and more cage contained so there's less chance of damage and mess to a potential rental ?  
 
With a free ranging animal like cat or dog, not only is there the potential for damage to floors and carpets from chewing, pee or poop, you also have to factor in things like window and door trim that can be chewed, neighbor complaints from barking/yowling, odors from litter, etc

I would never allow animals in my rentals after being burnt due to damage to property, renters not cleaning up after their animal, complaints from neighbors, and in the future not being able to rent to someone with allergies to animals. Good luck in your search.

I am a responsible pet owner and a renter for years. I was lucky enough to secure pet friendly rentals and I appreciated it a lot! I looked after the property and once when I moved, I paid to have the backyard redone because it was new when I moved in and my dog wore it out over the years. It cost me more to do that then it would have to give up my pet deposit but I didn't think that was fair that they should have to pay to redo it when it was newly done when I moved in. Back then, I think my pet deposit was 400.00 and I know it cost me at least twice that much to replace the sod.

Like cigarette smoke, pets leave a lingering aura in a building, like it or not. And, believe it or not, there are people out there with allergies to pet dander, both dogs and cats. And often times that aura or smell didn't seem apparent until the unit is emptied.  
 
If I enter an apartment previously occupied by either a cat or a dog I will really smell it, I'm one of those people who are sensitive to pet dander, and I find it difficult to breath comfortably in that environment. With that said, I will refuse a unit that has presence of either cigarette smoke residue or pet smell. So, I now live in an apartment unit that has never been occupied by animal or human.

renters like you are few and far between and if all renters where like you there would be many more rental units available to pet owners. Unfortunately there are not many renters like you and it still leaves the problem of co-renters or future renters who are allergic or sensitive to animals. That being said if all pet owner where like you I would be renting to pet owners.  
 
as a side note, if I a forced to rent to pet owners by law, I will quit the rental business, I will sell my properties and there will be fewer rentals available

As a landlord that speaks to other landlords many landlords are selling because of the many, many problems caused by tenants and their pets. Unbelievable how much damage can be done in a short amount of time.  
We are sick of the BS and are selling. Less rentals every month.  
 
Pretty soon the only places available will be run by the big landlords that do exhaustive credit checks and search Manitoba Justice and Residential Tenancies websites before allowing a new tenant to move in. Good luck to you if you have ever left damage or unpaid rent in your past.  
 
The last tenant left damage caused by his pet and himself and unpaid rent in the amount of over $9000.00.  
 
We have sold the house. One less place available to rent. This will continue until they are all gone.

Why do you need a permission from a doctor to have a pet lol, also animals are not toys or tools they are beings but owners should have the right to deny pets, many owners don’t take good care of them and end up damaging their properties, for me animals should roam free not be confined to a small apartment but that’s a different thing… Rhyno properties have a few buildings up here by the north hill that allow pets, although their management style is not the best I haven’t seen other apartments that allow pets.

That you can’t find a place for yourself and small dog. I have a small dog too, but I am fortunate to live in a house. But not everyone can afford to buy a house. I would be lost without my companion. Responsible pet owners are at a loss. I hope you can find somewhere for you and your pet to live.

I don't blame you one little bit. I used to have a rental years ago and I wouldn't allow pets either for the same reason. Maybe that's why I was a responsible tenant...I don't know. I do know that a well trained dog is a lovely benefit to anyone but that requires training and being a responsible tenant involves ensuring that canine does not do any damage and taking responsibility when that does occur.

Easy to clean up, feed and you can get a wheel from them to run on .
