Some Canadian paper money to lose legal status soon
3/1/2018 at 10:58 PM
Slightly off topic I know but there was a minor note in Tuesday's federal budget that said that Canadian $1,000, and $2 and $1 paper bills will not longer be legal tender at some point in the near future.
So, if you have collected any of these paper bills you have a choice - keep them as collectible items or deposit them into your bank account. If you have uncut sheets of $1 or $2 paper bills (many people bought these when the loonie and toonie were introduced) they will need to be cut into separate bills before the bank will accept them for deposit - how precisely do they need to be cut? - I'm trying to find the answer to that question so I've contacted a couple of banks and the Bank of Canada - still awaiting and answer.
Once these paper bills lose legal status (could be as early as May but that's just a guess) then banks and businesses won't accept them - the only institution that would accept them after they lose legal status is the Bank of Canada I believe.
