Any lawyer can help you draw up a proper legal will, and most usually don't charge a whole lot. I think my husband and I paid around $175 a few years ago when we had ours done.
You can also download documents from the internet, or you can just leave a written letter/list, etc. and sign it. Make sure someone knows where it is to be found. This is considered completely legal as well.
Having a will with a lawyer is the easiest way to ensure your family/friends will not have to deal with a lengthy process to finalize your estate. Although there are other ways of making a legal will, it still could make more of a process for who you leave behind to look after things.
Make sure that you talk to the people you want to name in your will as executor and power of attorney, as this is something most people want to know ahead of time that they are responsible for. These are not jobs to be surprised with after your loved one has just died.
