I have noticed that the majority of rental units I've seen advertised say something along the lines of "no smokers allowed" or "will not rent to smokers."  
 
I understand that not all landlords want people smoking in their apartments but what about the many people who smoke but don't smoke indoors? Most people I know who smoke don't smoke in their home, regardless of whether they're allowed to or not.  
 
My question is: Why don't landlords specify that there is no smoking allowed in the building without creating an all-out ban on people who use tobacco? It seems a little extreme to me.

Their clothes smell of smoke. The smell of smoke follows them in the air.  
 
Smoke outside, come in, walk down the hallway, the hallway smells of smoke. It smells exactly as if someone was smoking in the hallway.

I will not rent to smokers. Even if you only smoke outside, your hair and clothes stink and it lingers and transfers to everything you touch. I also don't want the yard littered with butts, nor should the other tenants have to walk through a cloud of smoke to get inside.

If it’s non smoking unit go outside. Just be responsible and clean up your butts.  
 
Falls under the non of your business act.  
You don’t need to disclose to your landlord that you are a smoker.  
And they can’t evict you for smoking outside.  
My previous landlord tried to tell me that I wasn’t allowed to smoke outside.  
Rental board told him otherwise.

I wish the renters would smoke inside because if they smoke outside we can't even have our windows open when the nice weather arrives!

Cigarette smokers make me nauseous. Your hair stinks, your cloths stink, your breath stinks, and it is amplified 10 times over during the cold winter months. If my building started to allow smokers to smoke indoors we would be out of here in a heart beat. Sorry but that's just the direction the world is headed in. Smoke free.

I wish there weren't any smokers at all, they contaminate our air, it's very bad for you health and people around you, everything stinks like smoke and that smell it's gross. After 5 years in this country I still don't understand why people go outside in winter and freeze to death just to kill themselves with smoke. Be strong and quit that horrible vice. I wish no units would rent to smokers.

This is off-topic, the discussion is about smoking in rented buildings.  
 
 
Like others have said: the smoke follows you everywhere. And during the winter I've had neighbours smoke inside their apartments because they don't want to go outside in the cold. It gets into the whole building through the vents and everyone can smell it. Not to mention a fire hazard if they're not putting their cig butts out properly. I'm constantly finding cigarette butts laying on the ground in the parking lot, too.  
 
Cigarette smoke can leave lasting damage. Landlords and owners have every right to state that they don't want this in their buildings. Smoke outside, respect your neighbours and the property you rent, and look into quitting to give yourself a healthier future!

people say they will follow the rules but they don't, become a landlord and you will see the result of it.

Soon we will need regulations to protect the Landlords rights to who he rents too or does not when it comes to smoke.  
Now it is cigs but soon Medical weed that is easily confused with Recreational. Medical wise there is more than smoking or vaping to get your "medicine". The landlord should not have to chose.

Just don't smoke right by the doors. During the Summertime, I like to leave my bedroom and living room windows open so I can keep my place reasonably cool and have fresh air in my suite. If somebody smokes by the door, I get the smoke into my apartment which is on the top floor! Looking down from my suite is the main door and parking lot.

9 times out of 10 the "innocent" tenants smoke inside even when they say they won't, Other tenants complain and the cleanup is costly. I had a conversation with a tenant just this week about the smoke smell of the other tenants clothing etc bothering them. As one would expect the non smoking tenant is the more desirable of the 2.  
 
If everyone was respectful there would be no issue, however they are not.

If you want a place that allows smoking save up and buy your own place. Renters often think they should have all these rights. You are technically living in someone else’s property. It’s not yours. You only rent it.  
If you say you can’t afford it, perhaps stop smoking and you may be able to buy a place of your own. I know I’d much rather choose home ownership than smoking.

I'd almost say that you're discriminating against people who smoke saying that you will not rent to them just because I smoke doesn't mean I will smoke in your building I can smoke outside it is a free world for people to smoke outside and yeah I think that you are being very discriminated to the people who are smoking I'm sure if I went to the rentalsman they would have a different Outlook against you and I'm sure they would tell you that it is illegal for you to be doing this maybe someone should report you

I also wouldn't rent to someone with obvious anger issues. It's my property that I worked hard to pay for. You aren't entitled to anything, including being allowed to destroy my property. Sorry not sorry.

Well when I don't have anger issues into I'm telling it as it is if you went to the rentals man they would tell you that it is discrimination to say that you will not rent to someone who smokes just like as if they were black native Etc you're the one that's being ignorant here not me so I really wish someone will report you someday someday you will get your karma

I know lots of people who rent that are smokers and they smoke outside when they leave their apartment is as clean as it is when they come to it and smells clean so I don't see what the problem is about giving damage deposit back to people who smoke sounds like you must be an auntie smoker

I smoked and lived in the same apartment for 10 years. When I moved, the landlord came in and said he could not smell it (I obviously cleaned it before I moved out), and he would have no problem renting it.  
 
I also got my full deposit with interest back.  
 
(but, even though I smoke, I am anal about a clean house)

Points raised, I’m a smoker, and yes it’s a disgusting habit, agreed, there are always aspects of looking into things, I don’t agree that you can rent or not rent to someone based on if they smoke or not, just my opinion, but for conversation sake, if I had a medical condition, that I was able to smoke medical marijuana for, and I’m talking outside of the residence, how would the landlords approach that issue? Would that be similar to saying “ for rent unless your disabled” curious of the thoughts on this aspect of things, from both sides, because smoking outside is smoking outside regardless, and as a landlord your really only in control of your home and property, but let’s say I rent from you and go smoke on the street? What can you do about it than?

If you went and smoked on the street, tobacco or marijuana, that isn't an issue. If you smoke just outside the door and blow smoke into other tenants windows and then carry the smell back inside it's not cool.  
 
Landlords can stipulate in the lease that smoking is not allowed within a certain distance of the doors, just like any other business.  
 
Medicinal marijuana is also available in other forms that don't smell or need to be smoked.

I’m a smoker and previous apartment I lived in allowed smoking, lived there for 4 years never once did I smoke inside even when it was -40. I also have children so I don’t subject them to my habits in house or car. I don’t think it’s right to say no smokers allowed, absolutely no smoking inside allowed is okay to say though I think, but I guess some don’t follow the rules. I live in a new place now and again smoke outside.

Thanks for the input, but if I smoke on the street outside the rental property, the smell is still on my clothes correct?

And don’t get me wrong here, I hate it, even as a smoker, having to walk through other people smoking at an entry way.

Please look at it from my perspective.  
 
I am not a corporation or a rich multi-property owner. I am a single parent that has also struggled to make ends meet in the past. I am someone that has worked for 30+ years to be able to own more than one property and am choosing to rent at an affordable rate to responsible people. It is up to me who I allow in my property. I have modern, clean and updated suites that I have invested a great deal into.  
 
For the record, any race or religion would be welcomed as a tenant provided they abide by the lease and don't devalue my investment during their tenancy.

You go to rent an apartment they will know your a smoker. unbeknownst to smokers you can't hide the fact you smoke everyone can smell it

Yeah there will always be smokers that are "responsible", and are big girls and boys about it.  
 
But the majority of smokers don't think like you. So it does suck that the bad smokers ruin it for the good "responsible" smokers.  
 
Unfortunately, you got to live with the discrimination.

How does a person "devalue your investment" by smoking away from your building? All that's needed is an agreement to not smoke in the building or near an entrance. Being a person who smokes doesn't magically make you an irresponsible tenant or someone who's going to destroy your property
