From the link below, Calgary council has recently voted to endorse a proposal calling for a reduction of residential speed limits. A study will now be conducted re lowering speeds on residential streets to 40 or perhaps 30 km/hr:

For places like Calgary which is a huge city, they have many roads that are higher speed limits. And most roads are 60km which is great to take to work or where ever so it makes sense in certain parts of the city that has just schools and housing. But not to ethical in Brandon. Brandon is mostly residential. That is all Brandon really is so your saying we would have 2 streets Vic and 18th at 50km, part of 1st at 50/60/70 and part of 34th at 60. The rest of Brandon would be 30/40. That’s too slow for a city that’s trying to grow.

We have people speed down our street leading to a sharp corner, they often skip the curb, they go so fast....would be awesome for people to slow the heck down!

People need to stop comparing Brandon to big cities. We are a glorified bit town. Nothing has been established here to be considered a big city. You want your people to invest business here you won’t get them to stay here by doin this

Just a big cash grab for speeding tickets and in MB would mean license and insurance costs going up which benefits the government more.

I would definatley still be doing 50 on all streets even if this ridiculous crap was passed in Brandon.

There are other aspects to the debate such as impacts on traffic flow, how many people would actually obey a new limit and how easily enforceable such a change would be.....
but strictly in terms of safety this article from a couple years ago speaks to likelihood of survival after a pedestrian is hit at varying speeds. The article quotes a study as saying 9 out of 10 survive at 20 mph and that drops to just 1 out of 10 at 40 mph:

Unfortunately my perspective has been that most of my near misses are on busier streets that this wouldn’t apply to at crosswalks where a vehicle simply blows by without noticing a pedestrian is there (Richmond is world class awful for this at all 3 major overhead lighted crosswalks between 34th and 18th). Perhaps also opportunity to invest in more obvious crosswalks? But at the same time on the street I live on it isn’t atypical for a car to rip by at 70+ with kids in the immediate area playing. Kids are educated on how to best stay safe but What opportunities are there to change that driving behaviour?

I own property on the north hill. For two years, there was a detour down our street. I called the police numerous times due to people driving high speeds. There was even an accident at the corner. I fully support this.

The most likely way for you to be killed or maimed in the following week are traffic accidents. Not terrorists , mass shootings , lighting , shark or gator attacks (on vacation ). Our primemister said he wants Canadians to be safe when referring to more gun control - yet afterwords the speed limit on some of our highways was put up to 110 kmhr. The most direct way to save lives is to lower speed limits - of course they must be enforced - which means more money for our cash strapped police forces to work with . It is clearly a win win situation .

So what they reduce it to 30 and people will go 15. reduce it to 20 and people wont go fast enough to get through a pothole or an inch of snow. The speed limit has been fine for the last how many years.

I am not in favour of this. Traffic calming... well that is a different topic altogether, and a better solution than simply advocating for the reduction in speed.

To keep traffic off of residential streets if the major arteries had more appropriate speeds, like 60 km/h instead of 50. Also to have the traffic lights timed properly for an even flow of traffic, not the stop and go that most lights are currently timed for.

60 will become 70 then. Regardless of limit people always go at least 10 over limit. Theres too many traffic lights to justify an increase in the city on major roads. Maybe rosser north to corral center could use a boost but that's about it imo.

People are already disregarding speed limits so lowering probably won't help. They aren't doing 70 cause the limit is 50, they are doing 70 cause they don't care.

Major streets (vic, 1, 18) i know I can get away with 60ish so i do it. If speed limit is dropped to 40, probably not doing 60, but probably try at 55. Residential streets i do stick closer to the 50, due to the more hazards (kids, pets, people opening doors), at 40KM/h still going to do 50.
This is more a flow of traffic. I don't weave in and out, unless its someone doing like 40 down victoria. I drive what others are doing.

If police better enforced the laws we have in place now, this wouldn't be a discussion.

They need to lengthen turning lights (people will still run them but hopefully less) If I am 3rd car in line, I should easily make the turn light. Especially from 7am to 6pm. I am all for red light cameras. Every light controlled intersection needs them. It would crack down light running big time.

When driving past a school I always keep my eyes wide open and never see one single young adult walking!

The city doesn't have the authority to change the speed limits anyway!

Maybe when driving we should all take better care.

As for the speed limit on highways? Pretty sure that a fatality can happen even at 60 kmph.

Personally, I don't understand the need most people around here seem to have for going at 60, EVERYWHERE. There are very few places that will take you more than 10 minutes to get to with no traffic. With traffic, it''s a lost cause anyway.

50 seems more than adequate both on most main arteries and on connector streets (6th, 10th, 13th, 24th). But on anything smaller (particularly ally''s), it is both unnecessary and dangerous.
Between first street and 34th in the grid, there are few areas more than 4 or 5 blocks from a connector street. Hence, why the need for speed in a residential area?

People (particularly children) and pets wander out into the road. It''s annoying, but it''s a whole lot easier to deal with at 35 or 40 than at 60. I''m thinking a screech and a scare, as opposed to hitting a tree.

One of the most stupidest ideas ever. How about teach your kids the rules when crossing the street. I can't even stand the school zones..to the point I avoid them

Hi everyone! I didn't realize Adam had posted my Tweet. Please allow me to respond.
My Tweet and Facebook post were intended to stimulate a conversation and a healthy discussion on the topic of speeding on residential streets. Let me be very clear, I am talking about residential streets (not Richmond, 34th, 1st, Victoria, 18th or other major city arteries).
My main concern is safety. I have had people in the Victoria Ward stress to me that speeding remains a major concern, therefore, as a city council candidate, I am simply listening to the concerns of the residents in the Ward that I am seeking to represent.
I would like to thank everyone for their comments whether you agree with considering a speed limit decrease or not. I respect your opinions.

I don’t believe the speed limit is the answer to the problem. They do nothing unless enforced. This city would be awful like Virden if we had to drive that slow.

There are people that go faster than speed limit because they feel they are entitled and urgent. When it is not. Easier thing to do. LEAVE EARLIER

Enforcement is the key of all rules. More cameras though clearly marked that they are there

And they major thing. If caught speeding and you go to court to get out of it as you feel you were wrongly ticketed as you going 70 in a 30 speed zone. Have them pay all court cases over their ticket.

Speeding in school zones double the penalty as they do in construction zones.

Another idea. For the repeat offenders put a speed lock on their car to prevent them going to fast like done trucks do.

Funny story about speed cameras. My friend in Edmonton knew there was speed cameras on freeway overpasses. She goes back and forth to work and for lunch. She got 4 speeding tickets come in the mail for one day. Took responsibility and paid them but funny story for her to tell.

Not all hazards are predictable. Case in point, young children or animals.

Or, learn the hard way. Good luck convincing a judge, however.

There is nothing wrong Virden's speed limit based by the number of times I've been there. They're a lot smarter drivers there then in Brandon!

Back on topic, I believe its time to reduce it the speed limit to 40km per hour on residential streets. As it is, one is probably driving 'only' 40 km per hour downtown on Rosser and quite likely Princess Ave. As for enforcing it, it would be no different then enforcing people who still use their cell phones while driving, people running red traffic lights etc.

By the way, there was zero excuses for anybody fishtailing like the 4 trucks I saw on Victoria Ave around 7:45AM. Its too bad the police weren't out and pull them over for being just plain stupid.

The school zone reduction in Brandon was the wrong solution for a questionable problem. Brandon Sun reporters looked through years of records and could find no traffic fatalities near schools in all of their records.

I have always been supportive of establishing school zones, but not with a reduced speed, but with a quadrupled rate for speeds above 55 or 60.

That would mean going over 60 would be be $726
over 65 would be $985
over 70 would be $1249

I have never believed that people going 50 or under were the problem. Plus, a multiplied fine could be used near Earl Oxford.

Kirkcaldy Hieghts accident involving a child on Knowlton Dr. is one I remember.
The city changed the parking rules on Knowlton to increase safety on the street.

The stopping distance at 30km is 12 meters and at 50km the distance is 23 meters.

The 4 second difference in travel time in a school zone might be worth one life of a child every 40 years.

I’m not sure about 30km everywhere else.

a four way stop sign. I have seen numerous vehicles blowing right thru without stopping or slowing down. That to me is more dangerous than driving 50k, especially given the fact there is a railway track smack dab in the middle.

Good afternoon!
I appreciated hearing everyone's comments on this topic. Since everyone on here was passionate about the speed limit issue I thought I would pose another one for you.
What are your thoughts on election signs on boulevards, PUBLIC property, ditches and random locations?
My commitment is to only put my signs on private lawns and balconies (with permission from the home owner/tenant) of course. IMO this demonstrates support. Putting them everywhere else just helps with name recognition. Your thoughts? Should election signs be allowed anywhere or should there be more restrictions than the city currently has in place?
