House explosion on Queens Avenue

Has anyone heard if there were people home when the house exploded tonight? Hoping it was empty!!!

Gas leak?

Some people have speculated gas leak while others say if it were a gas leak there would have been fire?

I too saw the vehicles parked in the drive but was still hoping maybe they weren’t home.

There seems to be a lot of cases online if you google natural gas leak without fire. There's stories of houses that have exploded and no signs of a fire and it was determined to be caused by a gas leak.

According to Twitter, Star 7 was dispatched to Brandon for a scene call 2 hours ago. And I read one person posted seeing a stretcher being put in an ambulance and taken away. I really hope it was just precautionary and everyone is ok.

Shook our house

We heard a loud explosion at our house two blocks away. It literally shook our house a bit and rattled the windows. We went outside to see what happened and talked with neighbours wondering the same thing. We thought maybe something happened at Koch Fertilizer. When we didn't see anything or hear any further noises, we went back inside. It wasn't until we heard the sirens that we walked further down Queens Ave and saw the house that had exploded. Unbelievable. I hope there was no one in there.

The thought that someone may have been inside leaves a pit in the stomach. CBC is quoting Stars Ambulance as saying they were responding to a "significant explosion" in their Brandon call tonight:

Manitoba Hydro is calling it a "probable gas explosion" at the moment.

Queens Ave East in the 200 block remains closed this morning to both vehicle and pedestrian traffic as we continue an investigation in the area. Students attending Green Acres School should plan to take an alternate route.

As far as I can tell, Manitoba Hydro has deleted the tweet referring to what took place as a "probable gas explosion."

someones science "experiment " gone awry perhaps
if the block isn't evac'd then the possibility of it being
a gas leak is unlikely now.

They’re citing the same tweet that’s since been removed and imagine they'll update their story. Wouldn’t say that rules out gas as a possible cause but with it removed I’d personally avoid too confidently jumping to conclusions until more formal info has been put out by authorities that are doing the investigating.

It's still very possible it was a gas leak.

There would be no need to still have the block evacuated as it is very easy to isolate a gas supply to a house.

MB hydro will have removed their tweet as this is still considered an ongoing investigation and until BPS, BFES, and the OFC have completed their investigation they won't be able to post anything publically

I'm not speculating that it was a gas leak just pointing out facts and shutting down anyone who speculates that a "gas leak is unlikely"

A Hydro spokesperson is saying this morning that with the incident under investigation it is premature to speculate on cause at this time.

“ At 7:50 pm on October 22, 2019, there was an explosion at a residence in the 200 block of Queens Ave East. Police and the Office of the Fire Commission are investigating the cause of the explosion as it was noted there was a strong smell of natural gas in the area upon Emergence Services arrival. A 63 year old female was found to be deceased within the residence and a 63 year old male is in critical condition and has been transported by STARS to Health Sciences Center in Winnipeg. At this time this incident is still under investigation by Police.”

It's awful to hear what happened to the residents of the home. I was also wondering what that bang was yesterday evening that shook the house. I felt it here and I'm by Crocus Plains.

2nd degree murder charge

I would ask that in posting members please be as mindful as possible of the judicial process and to avoid assumption where fact is not known. Police have said that they will release more details on Monday but at this time little has been shared on what has led to conclusions that have resulted in the charge. Even still, in the situation of a charge in a case of the alleged severity that 2nd Degree Murder would imply its important to bear in mind that allegations must ultimately be tested in a court of law. Thank you
