Snow clearing on the boulevards?

Does anyone know why the city is clearing 10 foot swaths of snow off the boulevards? Is it to make it easy for the delivery people, or is there some other reason?

You kind of answered your own question there. But there's a few reason why they do it. Its mostly to increase visibility and widen the lanes. Plus its to make room for more snow if they have to clear the streets again.

It seems redundant to do that now, most of the snow usually falls before February. Also, widening the street I could understand, but to scrape snow off the boulevard seems like the only benefit is for delivery people.

What do you mean by "for delivery people"? I'm uncertain what that has to do with snow removal.

It is removed for visibility purposes. And unfortunately there is still lots of snow to come. March can be the most dangerous weather in which to drive in. Although the Temps are often warmer the snow is heavier and wetter than the lighter stuff that comes with the colder Temps. Plus it's usually icier with the freeze, Melt. Freeze , melt pattern.

Not sure about that. There’s lots of time for major snowstorms during March and April, that’s when we often experience the worst and it can be wet snow as well.
Cleaning boulevards now can allow easier and faster snow clearance in the event of a heavy storm.

I am glad they are cleaning everything, I love to see our city well maintained and by the way what do you mean "delivery people"??

When I say delivery people I mean the postman, amazon, food delivery, etc. I think everyone might have the wrong idea of the boulevard I mean. The city scraping down the boulevard has nothing to do with visibility as far as I can see. What are they trying to make more visible? The view of my house? I've lived all over this country and no where have I seen the city remove snow off of the boulevard in front of people's homes. Usually, that's where the snow gets piled, not removed.

City commits to clearing the streets. When it’s cleared it’s gotta go somewhere. If your street and the boulevard in front of your house are like most that I’ve seen, once the snow for the season gets to a certain point there are a couple problems that come to mind:

-driver sight lines backing out of the driveway. Potential hazard for drivers and, possibly even more serious, pedestrians

-the piles get high enough that clearing from future snowfalls would have nowhere to go. There’s usually only a couple days notice at the best of times before a major snow event and by then it’s too late to do a preemptive city-wide boulevard clearing.

BTW just looking through past data and it does historically still snow quite a bit between now and when the snowy season’s done… actually more on average than it does for winter up today’s date. About 3 out of 5 years will still see more than 30cm between now and end of season and around 2 out of 5 years will still see more than 40cm including last year at 47cm. Then if you really want to get into outlier years that are possible, 1995 still had 87cm still to come from Feb 18! Of course what falls and what's on the ground arent the same thing. You have to account for compacting and the fact that snow does melt off and on in between, especially later into March… but I'd imagine it comes down to where a city takes chances and where acts pre-emptively to stay ahead of what winter's known to do.

Years ago when they were very high trips in the middle of the street, a young kid was hit by a car because he slipped off the snow. Ever since then, if my memory is correct, I have been diligent in clearing off the boulevards.

I moved into valley view area this winter. I was surprised as well about them cleaning a gap in front of my house. They had been snow clearing and after grader passed the front end loader took a chunk out of the snow in front of the house. Is this a situation you saw Craig? And if it was I’m assuming it’s cause citizens had complained about them clearing and creating a ridge and not making an entrance near their house.
