PrimeConvoy said "I put your statement to the test and had a look at a satellite image of Brandon from 2025 and discovered that the following streets have unmarked crossings, pursuant to MPI's definition.
34th, McDiarmid, 26th, 25th, 24th, 23rd, 22nd, 21st, 20th, 16th, 15th, 13th and 11th.
By their definition, these are considered unmarked crosswalks that cross Victoria.
So, a vast majority of streets crossing Victoria are also crosswalks. "
Sorry I'm only seeing this reply now. I went to look at the map as you suggested. I have always walled those stretches many times, so I have a pedestrian perspective.
Between Fotheringham and 26th, there are clear cross walks at
Fotheringham
34th
Clement
McDiarmid
26th
Between 26th and 18th
25th
23rd
20th
18th
Except for 25th, all are marked in some manner. The the no ambiguity about whether there is a crosswalk or not due to configuration.
Starting at 18th and going east
15th St is ambiguous on the south side (north is unambiguously not a crosswalk)
11th
10th
9th
8th
6th
All except 15th are marked
Between 6th and 1st, they are all ambiguous. Some corners are clearly not crosswalk, but some are ambiguous from above. Having walked there many times, the ambiguous ones are where thr city has repaired the approaches and made them accessible. The older curbs clearly show that none of those streets are intended as crosswalks..
East of 1st, their are several streets with marked crossings, and then several blocks where it was ambiguous. After Douglas, most as crosswalks.
So I would argue, no, unless it is marked, between Fotheringham and Douglas, there are only, at best, 2 or 3 unmarked crosswalks. That is a distance of roughly 6.5 km. That is not the "vast majority".
This also poses the problem: why do I have to spend my attention trying to decide of something is a crosswalk or not? I would wrr on the side of crosswalk on a quieter street, but on a main atrial road, that's just plain dangerous. Hence, why pretty much all the crosswalks are marked on that road.
