Probably a silly thing to ask about, but does anyone know if there's anybody in Brandon who does forging or blacksmithing who works with others who go through training or something.  
 
Not too sure what else to ask or anything, but I'm interested in learning about forging and doing it for fun, not as a career thing. And I know people (out of town and country) who learned forging themselves on their own time for fun and have gotten good at it.  
 
Anyways, I've gone off on a rant, thanks to those who read this and even more thanks to those who give me answers!

Also, as a note I do know that saying 'guilds' is a silly way of putting it but I figured it'd be cute and some people might get a laugh out of it.

I don't know of anyone locally, but the Manitoba Agricultural Museum at Austin may know of someone.

There are three welders in the handyman/craftsman section of classifieds. I purchased some yard orbs from a guy on 9th street, but I don't recall his name. Past the roundabout on 9th street. He did great work.

There is a guy who does some who comes out for the antique tractor event at the aviation museum in the late summer. Maybe someone can remember the name of the group and get you in touch.

Thanks to those who replied, I may get lucky and be able to get a hold of some dudes who play around with metal, but I may just have to start doing some projects on my own and just be careful with what I do.

and see if there are any members in the Brandon area. Slowly building a gas forge myself for winter fun however typically only do small pieces with oxy-fuel torches. going to use the forge for making Mokume and canister steel myself.  
 
If you need heat treating or have welding related questions I can help out. It is what I do every day in the real world.

My mom's cousin started one in a 40 X 60 shed just outside of Lynchburg Tennessee (where they make Jack Daniels) when he retired. He was an engineer by trade and started this blacksmith thing as a hobby, but now he has a dozen or more guys that come to use his shop and learn/teach each other on different aspects of the trade. Over half of them are engineers who all have a working knowledge of different kinds of steel and understand the physical changes the metal is going through as it gets to different temperatures. etc. His wife wasn't overly impressed when he wasted money on this huge shed for his silly hobby, but now the place is busting at the seams and the guys have to schedule when they come because there isn't room for them all to work at once. Good luck with your search as it seems like a great hobby to get into. When you can turn a rusty broken hammer into a piece of art - that is impressive.
