In today's Brandon Sun on page 3 is an article titled "Fighting to save starving stallion" which is about a three year old horse that was rescued by Strays that Can't Pay from a community (Sioux Valley) and taken to Virden vet clinic.  
 
The stallion is three years old and the size of a yearling (one year old) and was found to be in an emaciated state and had been lying on the ground in the cold for three days unable to get up.  
 
I don't understand how the owners could have possibly let this horses condition get to the point where it was beyond capable of eating and drinking and was lying on the ground for days?

been following on facebook, I can't believe the owners could be so irresponsible. I hope they are fined and I hope if they have children, they are looked after better than their animals.

As an owner of 2, my heart cries at scenes like this. Just donated.

which I read somewhere was that there was an older stallion that was bullying this younger horse, not allowing him to eat and drink.  
 
It takes only a few weeks for a horse to get to this stage, but interestingly this horse is THREE and is the size of a ONE year old....which would have been obvious over time that he wasn't getting the proper nutrition in order to develop properly.  
 
This situation is no different from that of a dog or cat who has been left to fend for themselves, except this horse can't roam free, it was corralled in a pen unable to forage for food and water.  
 
The "owners" should be kicked outside and penned up without food or water in the cold and see how they like it. This is disgusting and 100% preventable.

I have horses that bully other horses. Solution is to either separate them òr put out enough feed in a big enough area that the underdog can still get to the feed. I make sure each and every horse gets access to feed, water and shelter. Sadly I have known others that used that same excuse-that other horses kept the starved one away from the hay. I am so disgusted by that. Anyone that can't be bothered to make the effort to look after each of their animals should not have any animals.

This poor horse has passed away.  
I hope the caretakers are charged for allowing this to happen.  
 
To all the volunteers and people who came to this horses aid... you are amazing.

I have been following his story and he had seemed to be doing better...I'm glad he had his last days of love, food and warmth.  
 
Amazing efforts by everyone associated with the rescue efforts and all the volunteers who gave their time to him.

I would imagine that STCP has many bills to pay. They are always under-funded and don't seem to turn away any animal in need. I would hope that they are able to use this money as needed.

I am not affiliated with the STCP group that was caring for the horse, but from following the story on Facebook, the vet bills were already in the thousands of dollars prior to the start of the go fund me campaign. I also assume that if there are any funds remaining they will be utilized for the operation of their non profit group to help other animals in crisis.

is a good question, but I suspect the vet bill after all is said and done will be over $2000, I don't know, but I do know that constant care and a stay at a vet clinic for a horse isn't cheap.  
 
If there is money remaining, perhaps they can use to to help another animal in their care?  
 
The owner/caretaker of these animals deserves to be charged, held accountable for their actions. If this horse had needed help, it should have been sought long before it got to this point! It irks me that from the articles I've read the rescue organization doesn't want to "blame the caretakers or point fingers" at anyone. WHY NOT? It is some useless humans fault this happened, so yes...lets blame and point fingers at the ones who allowed this to happen! So frustrating.

the caregiver (and I use that term very loosely) who allowed this horse to get into such horrible condition should be charged with animal cruelty/neglect. there is no excuse for allowing an animal to starve that way.

the same day they brought in Dakota, they also rescued a dog that they named D.R. who was near death and was rushed to the same vet. He is covered in bite marks and has a bullet and a number of pellets inside him, shown by x-ray. If (and I say if, because the cost for Dakota would be very high) there is any money left over, it will be used for D.R's vet bill...or the frozen kitty Faith that they brought in near death a couple of weeks ago...or the long haired grey kitten that was hit by a car last week. Their vet bills are so very high and they do so much for the surrounding First Nations communities, by offering spay/neuter assistance and emergency vet assistance.
