Would anyone know if it's all possible to cross the border to the USA with a recently expired EID, application for a new one in the making? I didn't realize it had expired until it's kind of too late.

Probably not. Any expired ID is no longer valid.

If you are flying , no.  
If you are crossing border by vehicle, yes if you have your drivers licence and your birth certificate and everyone else in vehicle have their passports or EID

Do not under any circumstances try to use that. Unless you have all your ID in place, do not go anywhere near the border, it will not end well. Border guards have no sense of humour.

An expired enhanced ID I don’t know. But you can cross with an expired passport, so it could be plausible that it is the same with the enhanced ID.  
 
Quickest answer is just call the American customs office at whichever port you’re planning to cross.

Our experience in November says otherwise, and I called to both Boissevain and Emerson to be sure. Both said it was no issue with the expired passport. Admittedly it was only expired by a week or two, but still had expired. And they were right, didn’t get any hassle at all crossing.

It probably is up to the border workers at the time. Warnings have been given when within the 6 months of expiry. Certain items are dependant on the mood of the guard at the time. I have gotten away with being over limit on booze. I can't tell people that they can always be over limit with no penalties. I had a lime in my camper crossing the border. I was subject to a $300 fine for a 50 cent lime. He let me go as he knew I wasn't going to leave it in the US. But did warn me if some new person going by the book could charge me the fine. Better to be legal than take chances.

An expired ID is not fake, its expired. US Customs are generally very friendly but they are professional. If they are not friendly to you more than likely you said something stupid to them to.  
 
OP you should have no problem but like others have said it wouldn't hurt to make a quick phone call down just to be sure. Have a safe trip!

I like to think my crap is fairly useful, actually.

Try and use it make sure you tell them it is expired before they tell you. They like it when you declare this before hand and take any and or all extra I.D with you that supports you. By telling him immediately the officer won't think your hiding or being sneaky  
It's all up to the customs officer to allow entry so it's always 50/50

If it was me I would drive into Winnipeg and get a 10 year passport. Same hassle and it lets you fly.

What if you have a 10 year old DUI on record? No passport.  
I can’t find a phone number anywhere that will actually connect me to the boissevain crossing, or that will give me any useful info at all.

A single DUI conviction is not grounds to deny entry into the U.S. However, multiple DUI convictions or a DUI conviction in combination with other misdemeanor offenses can make a person inadmissible and require a waiver prior to entering the United States.
