Trying a new location Puerto Morelos Mexico. Have done quite a bit of on line research but nothing beats info from people who have actually been there. Looking for places to stay on or near the beach, where to exchange your money. Can you change Canadian cash for pesos at a bank? Favorite restaurants, side trips that kind of info. Thx in advance.

You can exchange money at the exchanges they are everywhere. Best to just pull pesos out of a bank machine with your bank card, you'll get the best rate. Search Airbnb for condos there are lots in PM. Enjoy.

We were staying at the Excellence Riviera Cancun just up the road from Puerto Morelos. We went shopping there. The shops are all the same. Was told if we needed money there were banks only open at certain times with a certain amount of money. I tried hitting up on the of ATM's and it tried to steal $60 american by getting caught in the machine. A local merchant had some needle nose pliers and we managed to get my money back. Lots of canadians rent places down there. Our timing was a little off as one of the locals was shot over a drug feud. Military was everywhere. Then there was a taxi protest going on. Wasn't a bad experience. One turn off was there was a store that had wood carvings, booze, etc. and one of the guys inside selling us stuff was giving us "deals" yet at the end had his hand out for a top in helping us. I was pissed and gave him 10 american and he was insulted. I told him he was with me for 15 minutes and gave us half price on overpriced items anyway. He shouldn't have gotten anything. We dinned at the Pelicanos. Was great food. We wanted to go fishing and I believe the man's name was Victor who chartered the boat right outside the restaurant. We caught fish and the captain took us to the Pelicanos restaurant and he cooked up the fish we caught. Was an awesome treat. Still not a big fan of paying to use the washroom at certain places.

You can use the ATM in the new Oxxo it works fine. I also use the ATM outside Chedraui it seems to have the best fees. If your card is Cirrus look for that logo. Also should call your bank and let them know you'll be traveling so there are no surprises  
Your bank will charge $2 fee for using an ATM and if I remember correctly the machine at Chedraui charged 38 peso for using. Currently you should get 13.8-14 peso for a Canadian dollar. Don't out pull out or use American money they all (vendors, restaurants, cabs) all give a poor conversion, usually 20-30%. I saw one restaurant in PM offering 14 peso for a US dollar. Currently the US dollar is sitting around 18 to $1 US. The money exchanges take about a 5% cut, it's not much but why bother when you can just just a machine. Try to take enough out at once so your not always getting dinged fees. Use your room safe. You will likely get a bunch of big bills (500 peso) they can be hard to break as no one has change but buy a water or beer at Oxxo for 20 peso and they'll break it. Be familiar with the rate and always pay in peso. And never use the money exchanges at the airport, ever! Totally rip offs. By the way under Mexican law it's illegal for them to put a mandatory tip or "propina" on the bill, most don't but watch your bills. Hope this helps. You'll love PM it's a laid back chill spot.
