Does anybody have a trick for parking near the airport in Winnipeg without having to pay? I really don't want to pay $20/day for 2 weeks when I'm gone. If you park at a big box store would they tow you if it snowed and was obvious that it was there for more than a day?

If you pre book, on-line you can park at the airport for about $13/day.  
 
If you gave CAA you can get a further discount.

Do you really want to risk your car being towed or broken into if it looked abandoned? Catch the shuttle if you don’t want to pay parking or park n fly outdoor is about $12 a day. You could also check Facebook monthly parking spots for $70 and get a taxi. Can’t imagine there’d be a free alternative or everyone would be doing it.

If you stay the night before your flight at some of the hotels nearby, they keep your car there and shuttle you to the airport. But the hotel rooms are not cheap.  
 
Sandman, Victoria inn, Hampton are a few of them that do it.

I looked into staying at a nearby hotel and leaving my car. It worked well in the past but this year was WAY more expensive. It was cheaper to stay at a hotel a small distance away and use the airport parking (prebooked and used CAA discount). We looked into park and fly off site as well and it used to be cheaper than the airport but wasn't for us this year using pre-booking/CAA rate.  
 
Do you have a friend in Winnipeg that you could park at their house and take a taxi. Though that also might not be less expensive.  
 
You could take the airport shuttle in as well but that also comes at a cost.  
 
I have had my vehicle towed in Winnipeg before, I would not chance parking at a mall etc.

There is not. You are paying or park at a friends house in Winnipeg and get them to drop you off, take a taxi or bus.

Just curious was the parking way more expensive or the hotel room itself? Do the hotels that offer shuttle charge for the parking if staying with them? Will be flying out of winnipeg this summer and had hoped to stay and leave vehicle at hotel! Never done this before so totally clueless!

Not a surprise.

The hotels near the airport cost significantly more than staying a bit further away (you can look up dates for your trip). They also offer park and fly rates so charge more than the room for you to leave your vehicle and your take their shuttle to/from the airport. In the past this has been a decent deal. This last time this cost significantly more than staying at a cheaper hotel further away, then parking at the airport. You will have to search up what is the better rate for your exact dates.
