Looking for good, reasonably priced hotel near The Forks ...

I have a friend from Quebec who is looking for a good, reasonably priced hotel near the Forks while her daughter and granddaughter are visiting the city for a conference. Her daughter is staying at "Inn at the Forks" and as they would prefer separate rooms my friend has decided to find a hotel which is not quite as expensive, but hopefully nearby. Does anyone have any suggestions?
I would also hear about any hotels that you DO NOT recommend just so we can take them off of the list.
Any thoughts on the nearby Holiday Inn?
