Fort Lauderdale

We are going on a cruise that departs from Ft Lauderdale & will be spending pretty much a full day before & after the cruise there. I would appreciate some feedback from others who have stayed in the area regarding hotels, activities & any 'not to be missed' restaurants. I would prefer a smaller hotel/motel over a highrise chain & nothing too costly but tidy & clean, close to the beach would be preferable.... the water taxi's look like a cool way to get around! Thanks!
