I am trying to book a getaway over Christmas and I'm limited in dates by family obligations and work days. I can do 5 or 6 days, but many online travel packages are for 7. I can book flights for the desired days but when I look at booking the resorts, the price hike from booking as a package makes it unreasonable. Any ideas on booking a resort in Mexico or Jamaica (for instance) at a rate that is competitive? I have tried the sites like Hotels.com and Expedia as well as some individual resort sites and so far the results aren't promising.

I always book thru Mcphail travel but I find the deals on westjet vacations then tell the agent what I want!  
Book all inclusive, you'll get the day's you want and it's cheaper

I find is more expensive than most. they have 3 star hotels in Cancun for $6000, where Signature has 5 star for $5000. Just can't get the flights I need with Signature it seems. Some have a cheaper price for a 7 day stay than a 5!  

Flights departing from Wpg don't generally start until December, and I believe they are mostly 7 day vacations. We found it very difficult to find 5 day

I'm not sure what your looking for in regards to amenities etc. What we did when we went to Hawaii was booked a condo through VRBO, ended up saving over 100$ per night than if we would have stayed at the resort. We had our own kitchen, laundry etc so had the freedom to cook if we chose...not that we did :p

We have had success with Delta Vacations.  
 
We don't go away a lot for leisure but we did book an odd number of nights all inclusive to Mexico with them and it was very nice. Price was excellent and we could book everything from excursions to car and flight.  
 
I have used them three times for short business trips too and found it very reasonable and have lots of choices for flights.  
 
Hoping to be able to go to Hawaii next year and so far they are showing the best pricing for the trip (well, other than Allegiant, but they are not much higher)

Yes, we rented a condo once and it was awesome! Plan on doing it again, but this time was looking for the all inclusive route.  
Haven't heard of Delta (unless it is with the airline...) so will look it up. Thanks!  
I would think if you had your airline tickets booked, a last minute deal would probably PPP up but I don't know if I have the guts to try that!
