    Does a 12 year old travelling to the USA by land need a passport or can they cross using their birth certificate? We unexpectedly have to go this weekend and just noticed my 12 year old's passport expired at the end of summer.

    If both parents are going a birth certificate should work

    I wouldn't chance getting to the border to find out. Why not call them to be sure.

    A child 15 years of age and under can travel into the USA by land or by sea with a birth certificate. Only by air they require a passport. We have always been encouraged to bring expired passports with us though.

    Yes a birth certificate does work for minors 15 and under, I went to the states in the summer for a basketball tournament and it worked for me, i also brought along my expired passport just to make sure but they didn't need it!

    Take expired Passport

    Birth Certificate should be fine but take the expired passport as well.
