Never been there. Looking at going in early august with a tent. Any current reviews on how it is and activities there to keep a family busy.

Going to the Canadian or American side?

American side has the best campground.

I'd do the American side for your first time. Gof Course, Bar, drive in restaurant, basketball courts, hotel, etc. The American side makes up 95% of the lake. If you like it you can always get a landing pass and access all the stuff you like from the Canadian side (if you have a boat.). Assuming they still do landing passes...

You've always been able to go anywhere on the lake because it's technically international waters....suddenly a couple years ago the Canadian Border guys decided they should be treating Metigoshe like Lake Superior, etc which requires you call into customs to let them know you've been on American water. It's never been "legal" to land on the American side and go have lunch without a landing pass. It's been a long time since I had one so I don't know if they still issue them.  
 
DO NOT get in your boat on the Canadian side and go for supper on the American side. If you get nailed by the Border Patrol (and there are a lot of them ) you will end up having a bad day.
