You wouldn’t have to spend a lot of time 18th street this month to notice the gradual change in skyline that’s been starting to take place. Following last summer’s demolition of the previous hotel located at the site and then excavation work that took place before winter, construction is now quite visibly and audibly underway on what will eventually be a 19th Street-facing 6 storey Holiday Inn Express just across from the Keystone Centre.
The Brandon Sun is reporting today that construction is expected to take between 12 and 14 months. If taken literally that would peg completion in the window of March to May, 2020 and have everything open by the summer 2020 date hotel ownership shared with the Sun.
The progression of news on the development has slowly unravelled before the eyes of folks who follow the discussion forums, starting way back in 2015 when it was first learned that the valuable real estate occupied by the Western Motel was a target for development. After plans for a development that would include a restaurant appeared to fall through, in the fall of 2017 it was noted by an eBrandon member in discussion that plans from a consulting engineer were published on the City of Brandon website for a new hotel to be constructed in its place.
