Getting rid of the penny

In the news yesterday there was a story about getting rid of the penny. I work in retail and people are already freaking out because they will have to pay more. I said we will round down when its one or two cents and up for three and four. I don't think they believed me. So, is it a good idea or bad to get rid of the penny. I think it should go. Also, if everyone who have hoards of them at home recirculated them,maybe they could keep them.
