I just got back from buying breakfast on the North Hill. Usually, I pay at the first window and receive my food at the second window. This morning, the first window was vacant. So, customers had to pay and receive food at the same window. While I was waiting, I saw the customer ahead of me pay with a card. The cashier gave the customer the debit machine, and then he returned it. I witnessed the exchange with my own eyes. This is why I am confused.  
 
When it was my turn, the cashier took my card and returned it with my food. I was confused about why I didn't pay. Then I realized, she tapped MY card FOR ME. Is that allowed?!??

I don't really understand your point? Did you give her the card...? If so, then what's the big deal, if you didn't want her doing it don't pass her the card... When I worked retail there was older people who would give me there card, tell me which account, and tell me there pin because they couldn't see... If you handed it to her I don't see why your in such a fuss about it.

You could probably find bigger things to worry about.  
 
That said, I don't see why it wouldn't be allowed. You passed your card to pay for goods that you asked for. Not like they took it out of your possession and used it without your consent.

you are right...you have no idea what you paid for. If someone does ask for a receipt.

Most places dont want the employee's to do the tap for the customer because they dont want to be liable if there are any discrepancies about the payment amount.  
 
I know tim hortons doesnt want them to tap for you, i handed my card to the girl once and i assume a supervisor gave her crap and told her they arent allowed to do it.  
 
Since everyone now is so quick to blame anyone else for anything that goes wrong, I cant blame any company for not wanting anyone but the customer to tap or enter their pin.

Never give your card to clerk to do it for you.  
You need to tap it yourself, and know how the exact money coming from your account.  
If you're not happy about it, I guess you can report to the manager.

Why did you give them your card? You said you saw them hand the machine to the car ahead of you, so why didn't you ask them to hand you the machine? Ultimately you gave them your card, that's on you.

It probably happened by accident. I've had this happen with a card still in my wallet as i was grabbing the machine.

on the North Hill lady had her purse by the machine and it automatically paid the invoice. Card still in the purse!
