Here's a question for a small segment of the population of Brandon that does this:  
 
Why do some of you blatantly park in Fire Lanes and/or directly in front of convenience/grocery stores when there's clearly a large parking lot available?  
 
When I question these people I get - "I am waiting for someone" or "I'm just grabbing something quick"  
 
Well - every time I go to Sobeys, 7/11, Safeway.. it's usually a 'quick' trip for me - but I still utilize the large parking lot made available to customers.  
 
I don't park directly in front of the doors nor do I park in Fire Lanes that are clearly marked.  
 
Essentially, why do some of you feel you're 'above' the bi-laws in this city as well as feeling entitled to park wherever you wish as long as it's convenient for you?

Entitlement and laziness? Or it could be medical for some ? I see it all the time along with a zillion other peeves ...I just chalk it up to they must feel they need to ( eye roll)

Probably the same dicks that block my driveway while they run to the dollar store. "Oh its only a few minutes". Usually closer to 20 minutes. What if I'm trying to go to work? What if my child has a medical emergency? Some people only care about themselves, selfish and ignorant.

This is exactly why fire trucks have those huge bumpers on the front. Go to Rosenbauer's website and look at the pumper trucks...they're designed to move vehicles out of way during a fire. Also, those lanes are required by law to have no parking on them. I just shake my head at the low-lifes that park there.

Nope. Medical condition is an excuse, if one can walk through half of a store here and there then should be able walk a 100 feet from parking lot to the entrance. Parking lot distance to the entrance isn't a 1 or 2 blocks away.  
I limped for a long time with a sore achy foot and I never put myself first before anybody else, of course I would walk slow or limp slow and wait in line as anybody else never cut off anyone.

I can see if people are parked right in front of doors, handicapped or other special parking spaces but if it isn't affecting how you get into the store and it's just about breaking the law why the hell do you care so much? Let them get towed or ticketed and find something more productive to do with your time

Why does it bother me? It bothers me when they park in front of the store blocking a lane. One then has to wait till the oncoming lane is clear in order to go around them. Towed or ticketed? I wish that was the case. I have never seen a bylaw or officer ticket anyone parked in the fire lanes of Sobey's, Walmart, Shoppers Drug Mart, etc. If you were to call enforcement the person takes off before they have a chance to get there. It would be great if we had an app like Winnipeg where you could take a picture of the offender and submit to have them charged....plus you get a small portion of the conviction. Not a bad deal actually.

causes visibility issues for both vehicles and store customers.  
 
Then I've also seen people on here claim that they can stop in a 'No Parking' zone because they are not getting out of the vehicle and therefore not parked. And vise versa, seen it go both ways.

no one inforces the bi laws i have similar issues with handicap stalls being used to eat lunch they have no plackard dont park there

Up to the owners of the property to have there staff trained and sworn in as by-law enforcement officers to be able to issue tickets, the city gets the revenue, by-law has jurisdiction all over the city but pretty much have their hands full and no time to worry about someone parked in a fire lane at a grocery store because as was mentioned, by the time the call goes in and they get it and arrive the offender is gone. But really it's not a huge deal IMO, frustrating, yes, but there's bigger things in life to worry about.

Police/By-law do not enforce private lots such as the ones you have named. They are not responsible for patrolling and enforcing private businesses.This is a prime reason you see private security at Superstore as an example.  
 
Furthermore Police/Bylaw do not enforce traffic control devices on private property, or to investigate motor vehicle accidents on private property (unless a party was injured, someone left the scene, or there was a DUI involved).

I would think the Office of the Fire Commissioner or the City Fire Inspector could enforce the parking lanes by fining the business. As part of the fire regulations.

C'mon Trevor! The OFC is not going to fine Walmart cause some dummy parked in the fire lane. That is not something they would want to start.  
 
But it is nice to see that there are a couple people on here that know how to spell by-law and not bi-law. The law doesn't go both ways

I notice taxis parking in fire lanes especially at Walmart,not to long ago I took my phone out and made like I was taking a picture the taxi driver ask me what I was doing I told him he was parked in a no fire lane he said so he wasn't to happy when I told him I'm showing it to bylaw he move

always amazes me how everyone is quick to judge without all the facts. Maybe the person has no cartilage between joints and its excruciatingly painful to walk. Maybe the half hr in the grocery store pushing a cart is all they can handle or they dont have any other choice since they need groceries to live. There are 100s of disabilities which are not visible with clothes on. Unless you know the person you have no clue what could be going on in their life. Instead of complaining on a nameless forum why dont you ask the person why they are parked there. Instead of whining about the lazy people why not just be grateful that you can walk from the parking lot.

Dropping off then leaving for another spot is one thing, but dropping off then staying there for long periods is another.

A couple weeks ago there was two police cars at Walmart, the blue unmarked car and a marked car both dealing with vehicles in the wheelchair spots. I believe they will come if they are called?  
I know hydro has called police to deal with a car parked in their customer spot while they were not a customer.. and they showed up and made them move.  
So maybe it takes a call but I do think they will deal with it if they know.

Being one of the people that NEED the loading zones(delivering Packages,Coke,Pepsi,Medical supplies etc.)And you most of brandon feels Loading zone means free parking! Brandon is the only city ive worked in that is like that.No one can walk here

are you talking about dropping someone off, parking and exiting the vehicle or about someone who sits in the fire lane waiting for the individual to exit the store?  
 
It always amazes me that people can come up with any excuse to disobey the law and conjure up reasons why it is okay to do so. Seems more often than not pulling the "disability" card justifies and trumps the laws set in place for the rest of society.

I seen a person parked in the firelane at superstore. A police officer was driving by this person and told him to move on. police parked and the person still had not moved. So when he got out of his car he started to approached this vehicle and a person came running out of the store. So not until the person got in the car did they move. The officer was talking to him as the person got in. As some somebody else said why do these people figure they are above the law. Start taking pictures and sending them in to the police. maybe they will catch on.

Obviously have not dealt with a disability. Its not an excuse.Its something that has changed your whole life. Does it justify breaking the law no,but it should hopefully be met with a little compassion and understanding.The two minute walk for you coulld be 5 mins of extra pain for someone. Doesnt seem like waiting an extra minute or two in a day for someone else should be a problem. As for the clarification it was about the drop off. Parking close to the store doesnt really help if you have to return the cart you used to the drop off point which is no where near the disabled parking. Or we could start another thread about lazy people and their carts. Funny how no one complains in the summer when the stores turns the front of the store into a pickup zone for the garden center.

a handicap parking zone, it's a Fire Lane. Drop the person off, then park somewhere else. Don't just wait there!!! No one is supose to park there anyway, no matter the reason.

-follow the rules and park in designated handicap stalls  
-Order online and pick up at the store  
-Go to store, shop then have groceries delivered

Also noticed that the money trucks also quite often use the fire lanes for loading/unloading. Go up and take pictures or tell one of them to move. They have guns. I dare you to, LOL There are no taxi loading zones at Walmart so, if they don't stop in front of the store, where should they pick up their customers? Should the customers walk to 18th Street bus stop to be picked up by taxi? Some of those taxi customers are seniors and/or have health issues too.

A couple months ago I was running to the liquor mart and saw a real estate agent parked in a handicap spot. He was not disabled and I was disgusted that somebody could be so damn lazy. He didnt have a pass either.  
I find it hilarious that people make excuses for why people do things. I myself have health problems and I dont feel the need to do whatever I feel because of my health condition. Theres always a solution to a problem. As a society we have to stop making excuses for people. I see people park in these lanes all the time.

a combiination of laziness, a sense of entitlement, a lack of consideration for others and denial of reality.  
 
Some feel that it is their right to park wherever they want, including directly in front of the doors. They will make excuses about mobility but then have no problem wandering around in the store for a distance 100 times greater than the distance from the handicapped parking spots to the doors.  
 
Some will say, "What difference does one car make ?" thinking that no others should/would do what they have done.  
 
Some seem to believe that the world is here to serve their own personal wants but not the needs of others.  
 
On more than one occasion I have "accidentally" lost control of my shopping cart when someone is parked directly in front of the doors. Other times I have stood in front of their car and pointed out where the real parking spots are. I have even suggested that if this is the best they can do, it is time to turn in their driver''s licence. I like the idea of taking a photo and will do that.  
 
I would love to see the police or bylaw enforcement address this. There would be an uproar from the entitled, but it would make good theatre.  
 
There were times that I drove my kids to school. There were clearly marked "no stopping" zones in front of the school for good reason. Some parents would still go there to drop off their precious offspring. One day a bylaw enforcement officer began writing tickets. What an uproar ! Somebody had called these parents on their sense of entitlement and created the altogether unreasonable expectation that they be accountable for their decision and that their precious offspring would have to suffer the indignity of walking a half block.

That action makes you a vigilante and a vandal. Your admitted actions don't do anything toward making our city a better place to live.
