In need of some Financial advice

OK before I continue I want to let you know that I am going to put it all out there so I am asking that people please refrain from rude comments and mean opinions.
Like most other people I have found my self in quite a bit of debt lately and there seems to be no end. I don't go out, I try my best to pay all my bills on time but it is getting more and more difficult. I have no savings and now I need a new roof terribly bad. I have 2 children and am happily married. I work full time and so does my husband and I am in the process of looking for a part time job.
My question is I have been thinking of trying to get a consolidation loan so I can just make one payment instead of the many others I have. I am wondering if anyone else has done this and how it was for them. Where they went to apply ect. Also I was wondering if there are any other options out there besides bankruptcy. Which I do NOT want to do! Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
