Position Overview:
We are seeking a Technical Officer to join our Distribution Planning Department. Under the direction of the Winnipeg Planning & Protection Section Head, you will analyze and review the effectiveness of distribution feeders and substations with respect to planning, power quality, voltage, loading, safety and reliability; and provide recommendations regarding installation of equipment and equipment settings necessary to operate the system within established criteria.
Responsibilities:
- Prepare complex planning studies using the appropriate system modelling computer software package to analyze the performance of the 24kV and below distribution system based on load and voltage test reports, to investigate the existing and suspected violations of the operating, planning and protection criteria and impact of customer load additions.
- Prepare recommendations on operational actions and system improvement work which shall include written reports on all investigations complete with estimated costs, justifications and all technical data necessary to prove a sound business case.
- Prepare and analyze distribution system models using comprehensive analytical software packages, calculate and compile load flow, voltage levels, motor start calculations, steady state and transient load currents at various locations for use in planning studies, protection requirements, and customer inquiries.
- Provide technical expertise to internal departments and external customers, with respect to developing supply solutions for major customers, as well as to Operations staff during abnormal and emergency operational situations.
- Represent Manitoba Hydro in coordination of City of Winnipeg development and distribution system planning expansion by participating in regular joint-initiative meetings.
- Conduct field surveys as required to obtain information related to planning of the 24kV and below distribution system.
- Coordinate meetings with office and field staff to identify necessary improvements to the electrical distribution systems and mitigate them in a timely manner.
- Communicate internally and externally, with personnel of other departments and divisions, and customers, to maintain an active continuous information gathering process in order to adequately perform distribution system studies.
Qualifications:
- A two year diploma in Electrical or Electronic Technology from a college of recognized standing and minimum of four years of experience related to the planning of electrical power systems
- OR
- Certification at the Technologist level by the Certified Technicians and Technologists Association of Manitoba (CTTAM) and minimum of four years of experience related to the planning of electrical power systems.
- Thorough knowledge and understanding of the electrical distribution system and application of the Distribution Standards.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of applied practices as related to distribution planning and protection.
- Demonstrated understanding of engineering economic principles.
- Working knowledge of analytical software packages used for electrical power system studies such as CYMdist and eGIS Distribution.
- Proven familiarity with and adherence to safety practices and procedures.
- Possess a valid Manitoba Class 5 Motor Vehicle Driver's Licence.
Salary Range
Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The range for the classification is $43.35-$59.82 Hourly, $83,070.78-$114,625.68 Annually.
